Social Unix Utilities I Miss

  • wall

  • who

I have fond memories of getting talk‘d on the VMS/Alpha machine back at CEC, and sometimes I wish I could just substitute a really nice .plan for my personal homepage.

Sadly, all of those were so prone to abuse that practically no UNIX sites support them anymore.

The first time I saw the web I thought, “Okay, so it’s like .plan files with pictures? Big deal.” And frankly, weblogs haven’t really done anything to change that.

All of them but wall, anyway.

Dreamhost has who and finger installed …

Talk was the main reason I wanted my own stable IP for years—IM is annoying, and there’s no way to tell how fast the person you’re talking to types -_-
