Ai Yazawa interview, part 2
Here’s part two of the Nana 7.8 fanbook interview. There are some editorial notes this time, which are clearly marked. I actually did research for this section. For this, I petition my audience for tribute in the form of goldfish crackers. I love goldfish crackers so very very much.
Well, we been able to get an idea of Ms. Yazawa’s images of the Nana characters, but now I think I’d like to find out more about Ms. Yazawa herself. I invite you to read along just a bit further. —Misato
Q9: Which band would you rather be in, Trapnest or BlaSt?
Y: A punk band would be impossible for me. (laugh) I’ll take Trapnest.Q10: On what instrument?
*Y:* Since I used to play piano, probably keyboard.
Q11: We’d love to hear one of your concert memories.
*Y:* I got front-row tickets to one of my favorite bands. On top of that, it was right in front of the guitarist, who I loved. Knowing how amazing that is, I used that memory to draw the scene at the Trapnest concert.
Q12: Do you believe in fortune-telling?
*Y:* Basically, no. There’s no point in saying “Your star is…” or whatever. I do like statistical analysis of personality based on blood type or whatever, though.
Q13: Do you like long hair or short hair better?
*Y:* Both. I mean, I just hate normal hair. (laugh) I like people to have their own style. Yasu’s good, too.
Q14: What three things would you take with you to a desert island?
*Y:* Smokes, paper & pencil, and… I wonder, would I need a nameplate on a desert island? (laugh) Oh, and CDs! I can’t live without music. It’s hard to choose just three things.
Q15: If you were going to open a shop, what kind of shop would it be?
*Y:* Something like “Sabrina.” [Sabrina is a shop introduced in Vol. 2—trans.] A vintage shop, with British stuff from the 60s and 70s.
Q16: What’re your favorite novels?
*Y:* I always come back to [Francoise] Sagan’s “Hello, Sorrow.” [“Bonjour Tristesse,” published 1958—trans.] Also, I bawled my eyes out at “Eternity Child.” [A mystery novel by Arata TENDOU—trans.]
Q17: What about a favorite movie?
*Y:* There are too many, I can’t choose! Ones I’ve watched over and over are “Gattaca,” “Death in Venice,” [A 1971 film directed by Luchino Visconti—trans.] and “Velvet Goldmine.”
Q18: Favorite TV Shows?
*Y:* I don’t watch much TV. Or rather, I can’t. I don’t have the time.
Q19: Do you surf the net?
*Y:* Sometimes. There are recognized fansites, so I look at those for reactions [to my work.]
